Birth and History of North Calcutta Polytechnic:

The origin of North Calcutta Polytechnic was Donbosco Polytechnic that started in the Year 1963 as a State Govt. sponsored Polytechnic, Salesian Society of Northern India with their office at Don Bosco School, Calcutta, purchased 22 bighas of land at 15, Gobinda Mondal Lane, Cossipore, Calcutta with an idea to run a polytechnic. Sri A.C.Sen, the Chief Inspector of Technical Education, Govt. of West Bengal came forward to encourage the idea and approved the plan in the year 1960-61. Green signal from the Govt. was received for constructions of the building and workshops. The money required for completion of the work was released by the State Government and when 80% of the work was completed, the Govt. expressed their desire to start the classes form August 1963 and permitted to admit 120 students in three branches of Engineering namely Mechanical-60, Electrical – 30 and Civil – 30. On 13th September 1963 honorable Education Minister, Govt. of West Bengal, Mr. Rai Harendra Nath Roy Chowdhury inaugurated opening session of the Institute. At the initial stages only a few teaching and non-teaching staff were appointed to negotiate the first year classes. But subsequently the number of intake in each branch increased and naturally more teaching and non-teaching staff were appointed. At present, 270 students are admitted into five branches of Engineering and after completion of three year study, ‘Diploma’ is given by the West Bengal State council of Technical & Vocational Education and Skill Development, Govt. of West Bengal. Nearly 40 faculty members and 30 assisting staff are engaged in imparting professional teaching to students.

At the beginning, the State Govt. formed a Governing body and the members of the governing body were mainly taken from the Salesian Society. The Salesian Society appointed Rev. Henry Torra, S. D. B as the Principal of the polytechnic and Rev. Father Doro, S. D. B as Secretary at the governing body. (Both of them are no more in this world). The first session started in the magnificent building in the year 1963 and gradually the building and workshops were equipped with machines and equipment etc. In the year 1969, the Salesian Society expressed their inability to run the Institute under their management and handed over the Institution and part of the land to the State Government. The Administrators continued for few years after which the principal was appointed and the Governing Body was formed. On the 16th October 1976, the Government of West Bengal has taken over the Institution and its staff under the direct control of the Government and Sri. S.K.Hore joined as Principal. Some eminent teachers and non-teaching staff were Sri. A. Konch, Sri D.N.Ghosh, Sri P.K.Ghose, and Mr. M.K.Bose. The Institution has its golden heritage in teaching for more than 50 years and produced many brilliant students who are now serving throughout the country and taking initiative for technological development of the nation.
